What Happens on Concrete Pour Day in Wichita

Pour day looks fast from the driveway — a truck backs up, concrete flows, and a few hours later there's a slab. But most of what makes that slab last happens before the mixer arrives. In Wichita's expansive clay, a driveway or patio is only as strong as the ground and forms under it. Here's what a real pour day looks like start to finish.

• The prep before the truck matters more than the pour itself.

• Weather, timing, and finishing all happen on a tight clock.

• Curing is where a slab either earns its lifespan or loses it.

THE WORK BEFORE THE TRUCK ARRIVES

Most of pour day is over before any concrete shows up. A slab that lasts starts with the ground under it, and that's where the crew spends the morning. We strip the topsoil, compact the subgrade, and set a gravel base — a stable, draining foundation instead of soft Kansas clay that swells and shrinks with every wet-dry cycle. Then we build and brace the forms, set the grade for drainage, and place rebar or wire mesh where the slab needs it.

• Forms squared, staked, and braced to hold the pour without bowing.

• Reinforcement set on chairs so it sits in the slab, not on the dirt.

📐 CHECK YOUR SITE PREP

Before pour day, walk the site and ask three questions: Does the grade slope away from the house? Is the base gravel, not bare dirt? Is the reinforcement lifted off the ground? If you can't answer yes to all three, the pour isn't ready.

POUR, FINISH, AND CURE RIGHT

Once the truck arrives, the crew is on a clock the weather sets. Concrete gets placed, screeded level, and floated, and control joints are cut so the slab cracks where we want it to instead of randomly. Finishing — a broom texture for grip, or a stamp and color for a decorative look — happens in the narrow window before the surface sets. Then curing begins, the step homeowners underestimate most. Concrete needs days of controlled moisture to reach full strength, not a hot afternoon and a garden hose.

• Slab kept damp and protected while it cures.

📐 PROTECT A FRESH SLAB

Keep vehicles off a new driveway for at least seven days, and foot traffic off for the first day or two. Don't let sprinklers pound it, and don't seal it until it's fully cured. Rushing any of these is how a good pour ends up with surface scaling.

🔧 FROM THE FIELD

Kansas clay is the reason we won't shortcut the base. That soil expands when it's wet and pulls back when it dries, and a slab poured straight on it heaves and cracks within a couple of seasons — we get called out to tear out plenty of those. So we compact a proper gravel base and set the grade so water leaves the slab, because drainage failures cause more concrete damage here than cold ever does. In summer we pour early to beat the afternoon heat, and when a cold snap threatens we protect fresh concrete from freezing before it's cured. Every phase is done by our own W-2 crew, not a subcontractor we met that morning.

GET THE PREP RIGHT, THE FIRST TIME

A concrete slab is only as good as the day it was poured, and the day is only as good as the prep behind it. Do the ground work right and you get decades; skip it and you're paying twice. That's the difference between a crew that pours concrete and one that builds it to last.
