A lasting fire feature starts below the ground, the same as a driveway or a foundation. That masonry mass is heavy, and Kansas clay swells and shrinks with moisture, so anything set on shallow dirt will heave and crack. On our builds that means:
• A footing poured below the frost line — roughly 36 inches here — so seasonal heave can't lift it.
• Firebrick and refractory mortar inside the firebox, because standard brick spalls and crumbles under repeated heat.
• A flue and chimney sized and placed to draw properly, not fight the wind coming across the plains.
Get those three right and you've got a feature that reads as permanent, because it is.

The fire-feature failures we're called out to repair in the Wichita area almost always trace to a skipped footing — a pit ring or a fireplace set on a few inches of sand, then heaved and cracked apart after one freeze-thaw winter. We dig below frost, every time, and tie the base in so the whole mass moves as one piece or not at all. Inside the firebox we use firebrick and refractory mortar because we've seen standard brick spall off in sheets after a couple of seasons of real fires. And on wood-burning fireplaces we size the flue and set the chimney height for the wind that rips across open Kansas lots, so the thing actually drafts instead of smoking your guests out.
